Dr Traj Nibber, CEO and Director of Research at AOR has a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of nutritional science and supplementation. We have asked him for his expert opinion on a number of nutrients, to feature in our blog. We hope you enjoy these insights and overviews of some key nutrients.

Here he talks about the importance of taking the minerals Zinc and Copper in the correct balance.

Background

Zinc and copper are essential minerals which are needed for normal functioning of the immune system amongst other functions. These minerals also help our body metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Up to 40% of people over the age of 65 do not get enough zinc in their diet.

Zinc and copper are essential minerals which are needed for normal functioning of the immune system amongst other functions.

Unfortunately, the solution isn’t as simple as just taking zinc supplements as zinc supplementation causes copper deficiency. This means that it is the balance isn’t correct, we could deplete our copper stores.

AOR’s Zinc Copper Balance uses optimal ratios of these minerals to ensure that the optimal clinical benefits of zinc and copper can be gained.

Zinc is found many foods including oysters, tofu, lentils, mushrooms, wholegrains and meat.

Research

Zinc and copper have been extensively studied in a range of conditions, ranging from skin conditions (e.g. dermatitis) to lower respiratory infections (e.g. pneumonia). Zinc has been shown to be essential for the function of white blood cells, which help protect the body from bacterial and virus invasion. As such, it’s not surprising that zinc supplementation can reduce the symptoms caused by viral infection.

A number of trials in humans have shown that zinc supplementation is associated with a decrease in deaths due to severe pneumonia (a lower respiratory infection). Zinc has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of diarrheal episodes due to viral infections.

Furthermore, researchers that shown that zinc deficiency results in dysregulation of IL-6, a molecule involved in inflammation. A recent study showed that Zinc was deficient in people with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune inflammatory condition.

AOR’s Zinc Copper Balance

As such, we designed Zinc-Copper Balance to provide a balanced ratio of zinc to copper, to ensure optimal levels of these two important minerals are absorbed.

I highly recommend AOR’s Zinc Copper Balance if you are looking for ways to support your mood and to provide the nutrients to help normal immune system function.
